Anthropic Pulling Fable 5 from Pro? I'd Cancel

I subscribe to Claude Max (20) because Fable 5 is the most capable model right now. If they move it to a separate paid tier, the Pro subscription becomes a lot less valuable. I’m not paying $200 a month for a model that’s noticeably worse than what I can get elsewhere. I’d probably switch to OpenAI’s ChatGPT Pro or just use local models more, especially since the gap between open and closed models keeps shrinking.

Today is the last day Fable 5 will be included in the Pro plan. Starting tomorrow, users will either have to pay extra or be stuck with a lesser model. That’s a sharp move, and I think it’s a mistake.

Anthropic can’t really pull Fable 5 from subscription access without losing a chunk of their user base. It’s the main reason I’m on Max. If I’m suddenly forced to use a model that’s a step down, I don’t see the point. I’d rather cancel and put that money toward another service that doesn’t nickle-and-dime its most loyal users. I’m not alone in feeling this way — a lot of power users I talk to are already weighing their options.

The AI subscription market is too competitive for this kind of rug pull. OpenAI has been steadily improving their offerings, and local models are getting close enough for many tasks. If Anthropic goes through with this, they risk turning their best customers into someone else’s.

So today’s the day. If they don’t reverse this, my next billing cycle will be with a different provider. I hope they reconsider before they burn too much goodwill.
