# What does an apple and an egg actually cost?

"Voor een appel en een ei", for an apple and an egg, is the Dutch way of saying something cost almost nothing. This page tracks what that almost nothing is worth now. One apple and one egg per supermarket chain, reduced to a single number. The same idea as the Big Mac Index, with something that lands in your shopping basket every week.

The chain prices come from [Supermarktscanner](https://www.supermarktscanner.nl/). They refresh their prices daily; this page fetches them automatically.

One apple counts as 150 grams; apples are sold by the kilo, so that is an assumption. The egg is the pack price divided by the number of eggs.

Method: per chain the price of one apple (a loose hand apple by the kilo, usually Elstar, counted at 150 grams each) and of one egg from the standard ten-egg pack, weighted by market share and reduced to a single number. The trend line is the rate itself, built from our own measurements. The chain prices come from Supermarktscanner, the conversion prices from the source listed under each one. No number on this page is estimated or borrowed.

## FAQ

Where do the prices come from? From Supermarktscanner: the product page for one apple and one egg per chain. This page fetches them automatically; the chains themselves update those prices daily. Why is a chain missing? The index is only calculated over chains where both an apple and an egg are known. If one of the two is missing, that chain drops out of the average. What does an older date next to a chain mean? That the last fetch failed. The last successful price stays, with its older date and a warning, instead of becoming a hole or an estimate. How often does it update? The supermarket prices every few days; the conversion prices below them each at their own pace, from a few days to a few months.
